Gutai Survey at de Sarthe Gallery Gutai Art Association, oct. 03, 2015oct. 03, 2015
À propos
Opening October 3 at de Sarthe Gallery is a survey exhibition focusing on artists from the Gutai Art Association, dating from both the first (early 1960s) and second generation (1970s), including Tsuyoshi Maekawa, Sadamasa Motonaga, Shozo Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, Atsuko Tanaka, Chiyu Uemae, and Jiro Yoshihara.
Entitled simply “gutai,” the exhibition focuses on a certain quiet aesthetic that allows the traces of the artist’s engagement with the material to in turn propose a dialogue between the artwork and the viewer. As Jiro Yoshihara declared in the Gutai Art Manifesto, “Gutai art does not change the material but brings it to life. It does not falsify the material. In Gutai art the human spirit and the material reach out their hands to each other”.
“gutai” runs at de Sarthe Gallery from October 3 through November 1, 2015.
