HONG KONG — de Sarthe Gallery opens “Ink and Watercolor,” a mini-retrospective dedicated to the pioneering Chinese artist Zao Wou-Ki (1920-2013) that will coincide with this year’s Art Basel, on March 12. This exhibition follows the first instalment in a series of shows devoted to Zao that was organized by dealer Pascal de Sarthe in 2011.
Featuring 14 ink on paper pieces and 6 watercolor paintings that date from as early as 1950, “Ink and Watercolor” is a revealing microcosm that sheds light on the evolution of postwar modern Chinese ink painting as it absorbed and synthesized the stylistic innovations in contemporary art movements from the US and Europe in the wake of World War II.
“Zao Wou-Ki: Ink and Watercolor” runs March 12 through April 11, 2015 at de Sarthe Gallery, Hong Kong
